The XIII Asian Games (aka Asiad 98) was held in Bangkok, Thailand from 6 to 20 December 1998. A total of 43 countries from the Asian continent participated in the Games. The Asiad 98 had 36 official sports with 2 demonstrations which made it the largest sports happening ever hosted by the Thais. The Games consisted of 377 events with 377 golds, 377 silvers and 460 bronze medals. It was the last Asian Games to be hosted in the 20th century.
The XVI Commonwealth Games (aka Kuala Lumpur 98) was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 11 to 21 September 1998. A total of 70 countries from the Commonwealth participated in the Games, making this the largest ever Commonwealth Games to be ever hosted, and one with full participation of the Commonwealth member countries. This is also the first Games to be hosted by an Asian country, and the second Games to be hosted by a developing country. This is also the last Commonwealth Games to be hosted in the 20th century.
